GROOMING
Malamute coats only need a little attention even though they are very thick.
A good brush twice a week will suffice.
The exception to this is when they moult. Then they need a deep brushing every
day. Malamutes moult twice a year. Males have one big moult and one 'mini'
moult each year. Bitches have two huge moults 4/5 weeks before they come into
season which will be twice a year. Moulting is an awesome sight when every
carpet in the house turns grey and with every shake the dog sends hundred
of hairs into the atmosphere and most of them will land on your dinner. A
sturdy vacuum cleaner is a must.
EXERCISE
Malamutes need regular exercise of about 4-5 miles each day, and this in all
weathers. What would you rather do on a wet and windy sunday night in November?
Stay by the fire side or saddle up the dog and go pounding the pavements?
Be honest with yourself from the outset. Their coats are very good at insulating
them against the cold and these same coats keep a certain amount of heat out
but they should not be exercised on a mid summers day. At one o clock on a
July afternoon, most sensible malamutes will be found in the shade sleeping.
Mad dogs and Englishmen can go out in the mid-day sun but don't expect your
mal to come as well. Do not exercise your mal near a field full of sheep.
They are not safe with livestock.
